Active School
A proud Active School, working towards our second Active Flag.
Here at Ardagh NS, we are a proud Active School. We are currently working on earning our second Active Flag.
The Active School Flag
The Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan. The ASF initiative provides schools with a framework to guide, support and incentivise them to work towards achieving a physically educated and physically active school community. Once awarded, the ASF remains valid for three years.
Ardagh NS has always placed a huge emphasis on the importance of having active and engaged learners. We are a sports-loving school from an area steeped in the GAA, soccer and athletics, to name but a few.
Every year we make a collective push to become even more active. We know that if we all work together to increase our physical activity, not only will we feel better and learn better, but we will hopefully renew our coveted Active School Flag.
What the flag asks of a school
The Active School Flag is awarded to schools that:
- adhere to DES guidelines regarding PE timetable provision for all students
- teach a broad and balanced PE curriculum
- inform and invite the whole school community to participate in the ASF process
- self-evaluate current provision in terms of PE, physical activity and partnerships
- plan, implement and monitor improvements for each of these areas
- organise an Active School Week as part of the annual school calendar
